I am surprised that support for this idea has not been higher. At recent MR trade shows, I have had this conversation myself with many people--many complaining about having to compete against non-researchers. So is it an issue or not? Surely we are not giving up?
Agreed! Anyone can conduct research, it may not be valid, reliable, efficient, or effective, but the cost to entry for research is getting lower.
Okay researchers, time to put our marketing hats on and position ourselves more effectively.
As an industry, we've been able to elevate the importance of our function to the point that it is often hard to draw distinctions between marketing, consulting and MR. We are encroaching as much on agencies as they are on us. I agree this is happening, just don't see it as a bad thing, per se.
